Online Learning

EIC Principal Chris Long

Our Online school has been up and running since 13th March 2020, we are extremely proud of the teaching and learning that has taken place from Early Years to Sixth Form. Using our VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) we have been able to centralise our Online School so that as well as the teaching that takes place, all forms of communication and support to the EIC community is channelled through one platform effectively and efficiently.

EIC has clear, innovative and well established policies on students utilising technology in lessons. At Key Stage 2 and 3 students follow our IPad Policy and at Key Stage 4 and 5 - students follow a BOYD (Bring Your Own Device) policy, this has ensured that our students have been able to continue to learn at home both safely and constructively.

At this time more than ever it is important that our students have a strong routine, supported by our staff. In that respect, all students are following a timetable of virtual lessons, tutor/registration time and for older students some independent tasks. Having a strong daily timetable in place has helped ensure that the different curriculum can continue to be covered and that we can help monitor and support students from a wellbeing perspective.

As ever, online or not, we are committed to offering the most innovative and personalised teaching to students. Our small class sizes and expert staff are here to ensure that students are challenged, encouraged and stretched throughout their learning journey in order for them to reach their full potential.

Yours sincerely

Mr.Long
EIC Principal

Online Learning Through the Key Stages

Foundation Stage

Each day, we upload 3 videos to our Weekly Learning Journey. These videos are Literacy, Mathematics and a short story. In the English and Mathematics videos, teachers explain the lesson content, providing examples and introducing the concept to the students, just as they would do in the classroom. The lessons are engaging, entertaining and brimming with fantastic learning content.

On the same page, the teacher also posts suggested tasks and activities for the students. We encourage families to send us photos, videos and examples of the students’ work so that we can give lots of positive feedback and guidance for parents at home. By using video lessons, families have the flexibility to access the teaching and resources at a time that is more suitable to themselves and their child/ren.

Our Spanish Department also contributes to the story videos once a week, reading and interacting with the children in Spanish. Every Primary department posts videos, songs, and activities for the children to engage with at home, under the 7 areas of learning umbrella.

In addition, we offer students and their families the opportunity to “go live” once a week and share a special assembly time or Show and Tell with all of their friends and teachers. This is an invaluable opportunity and a real highlight of the week for our youngest students.

Key Stage 1

Each day, we upload 3 videos: Literacy, Mathematics and a short story. In the English and Mathematics videos, teachers will explain the lesson content, providing examples and introducing the concept to the students, just as they would do in the classroom. There are opportunities for students to pause the video and complete a piece of work, before moving onto the next part. On the same page, the teacher also posts suggested tasks and activities for the students. The lessons are engaging, entertaining and brimming with fantastic learning content.

By using video lessons, families have the flexibility to access the teaching and resources at a time that is more suitable to themselves and their children.

Key Stage 2

All students have access to virtual online lessons. Teachers are online 4 times a day delivering lessons with presentations, just as they would do in the physical classroom. In every lesson, we allow students the opportunity to complete work whilst they are online so that we can guide them and give them live feedback. We also post a short activity or extension task to be completed afterwards, if a student would like to challenge themselves further.

English, Mathematics, and Spanish post lesson content and resources on a daily basis, or on the day that their lesson would normally run. In addition, work for Science/Topic/Art, Computing, Music, and Mandarin is also covered in the online lesson. Teachers also post additional materials to help students at home or to reinforce the learning.

We encourage and ask students to send feedback via photos, videos, audio, and email. Children are awarded House Points which they can see on their Firefly profile and are given positive praise, as well as guidance for how they can continue to improve.

Our fantastic Primary Physical Education Department upload video lessons to encourage physical activity and they also set challenges for students in both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. We also offer live online yoga and meditation for Primary families and provide a series of weekly yoga video sessions in both English and Spanish.

Learning Support

We are aware of how now, more than ever, students and families may need additional support. We are able to provide 1:1 and small group sessions with our Primary Learning Support Coordinator, who also liaises with families on an almost daily basis. In this way, we are able to support students' academic and emotional well-being.

Extra-Curricular

It is with great pleasure and pride that we continue to reach out to students and families, and give them even greater opportunities to feel like a part of the EIC family. In Primary, we offer before and after school fitness sessions twice a week, a family yoga session and Music “jam sessions” where students can play their instruments to others and learn new skills.

Key Stage 3

Key Stage 3 students will follow a timetable of virtual lessons with their subject teachers. Registration will happen each morning at 8:45 with tutors . In addition to completing their daily timetable, students can also take part in extracurricular activities.

Academically across all subjects our students are supported, encouraged and challenged to ensure they reach their potential. All students are part of our House System and events/activities run weekly to further encourage both student achievement and to develop teamwork across the school. Our team of Key Stage Managers and tutors will closely monitor students’ progress and wellbeing.

Year 10

Students are continuing with their IGCSE/GCSE school timetable with teachers delivering online lessons through virtual classrooms each week for all of their IGCSE/GCSE classes. Assessments and exam past papers are regularly set and completed to ensure student progress continues and that they receive vital feedback on their progress. Students also have opportunities to work beyond the curriculum with virtual field trips and school debating competitions; just a couple of the extra activities running this term.

Year 11

Students in Year 11 are starting their International AS levels this term. The flexibility of this qualification means that students can be entered to sit their AS level exams at different points of the academic year including October and January. Our students will be taught by specialist subject teachers in small class sizes in order to ensure that all students are supported and guided through their AS level examinations.
