Yesterday, two EIC debating teams took part in the Sir Winston Churchill Public Debating Competition. As the first in-person debating competition since 2020, the EIC debating teams returned to their traditional format against 16 other teams from around Europe. The two teams, EIC Blue and EIC White were unbeaten in the qualifying rounds, competing against each other in the semi final of the cup competition. In a ferocious battle of critical thinking and quick wittedness, EIC Blue prevailed, qualifying for the final. In the final, we had the difficult position of opposing the motion ’This house believes that billionaires are immoral.’ With well crafted arguments and rebuttals, the team did an amazing job in opposing this difficult motion, but ultimately finished runners up in the competition.
We are very proud of both teams, securing second and third places in the event, with many students experiencing in-person debating for the first time. A special mention to Aisha, who was awarded ‘Best debater’ in the competition.
