On the evening of Monday 29th March, the Year 10 and 11 GCSE students attended a performance of the Salón Varietés production of the Lerner & Loewe's musical My Fair Lady. With examination season approaching after Easter, this live performance is vital to the written components of the syllabus and so armed with notepads and pens, they sat back to enjoy this classic musical favourite that gives audiences a wonderfully quaint Victorian and an enchanting rags-to-riches transformation, but also unveils the grim social injustices beneath the story with issues and themes that impact a 2023 young adult audience very differently from the 1950s.
However songs like “I Could Have Danced All Night,” ”The Rain in Spain,” “Wouldn't It Be Lovely,” and “Get Me To The Church on Time” are still timeless numbers that had several audience members joining in and our students clapping away.
With spectacular costumes and clever set design, this production gave them plenty of material for their upcoming examinations.
