The annual EIC International Schools Swimming Gala in 2023 arrived with its usual swiftness, and this year was no different. The eager anticipation of the children to return to the water after the summer break was palpable, and they enthusiastically threw themselves back into training, a characteristic trait of our EIC students. Their unwavering dedication, determination, and boundless enthusiasm were on full display.
This year, our Primary school had a smaller cohort compared to previous years, which presented a challenge in filling all the races, particularly among the boys. Nonetheless, it was heartwarming to witness children stepping forward for selection, knowing that they were volunteering to swim strokes that were not their favourites, all for the betterment of their team. This act exemplified an invaluable life lesson; putting the team’s needs above personal preferences. Being part of a team is something children relish, as it fosters self-confidence and instills respect for others. These qualities are not just for the moment but will continue to grow with them, rendering them more resilient in the future.
The Primary Gala, unlike its more competitive counterpart in Secondary, remains a celebration of participation and teamwork. We refrain from announcing scores or declaring an overall winner, instead, we encourage the children to push their boundaries and embrace discomfort. Our aim is to nurture sportsmanship and fair play, and I am proud to say that all the children displayed these traits admirably this week. Well done to all! As the saying goes, “The attitude you bring to a situation is going to determine success or failure” and the Primary Gala was definitely a success.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our colleagues from Swans and Sotogrande for their continued participation this year, and we offer a special mention to the British International School of Marbella, who joined our Gala for the first time. We eagerly anticipate many more years of friendly meet-ups!
