Just like in a game of Chess, the choices you make in life, can leave you in checkmate......
On Wednesday 22nd November the first GCSE practical drama examination took place. A student devised piece, 'Checkmate' focused on the concept of Chess to draw parallels between the strategic elements of the game and the complexities of young adult interactions and experiences in today’s world.
A group of female students were unknowingly linked and tied together because of their interactions with James, aka "The Player", as they dealt with issues such as appearance related pressures, a controlling and abusive relationship, a choice made that resulted in a changed future, and an addiction that began due to academic pressures. Their stories unfolded through the use of role-play, mime, and abstract sequences as the audience were asked to consider how, just like various chess pieces, the moves you make can have a crucial impact on one's future.
The hard work, innovation and commitment of those involved resulted in an entertaining yet thought-provoking performance that highlighted the outstanding abilities of our students, who gave dedicated, focused and strong portrayals on the day. A huge well done and congratulations to them; they should be extremely proud of their achievements.
