The Importance of Preserving Local Customs

The Importance of Preserving Local Customs

On Thursday 22nd February, the Secondary Modern Foreign Department organised an assembly to celebrate two key events: International Mother Language Day (a worldwide annual observance held on 21st February) and Día de Andalucía (28th February). These events gave students the opportunity to reflect on the importance of preserving local customs, in which languages play a vital role.

After a group of Year 9 students, dressed in traditional attire, shared a beautiful presentation highlighting the key and unique aspects of Andalusia, the audience reflected on the importance of protecting the world’s languages. It is estimated that at least 45% of the 7000 languages spoken around the world are endangered. Due to globalisation processes, languages are increasingly under threat and the United Nations calculates that every two weeks a language disappears, taking with it an entire cultural and intellectual heritage. It is therefore essential that we raise awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and promote multilingualism.

The assembly concluded magnificently with Ellie singing a love song in three languages; it was a unique performance from a very talented young lady that wowed everyone.
