Remembrance Day – Monday 11th November 2024

Remembrance Day – Monday 11th November 2024

Today marks 110 years since the start of World War I, which began on the 4th August 1914. As a school we came together to honour those who sacrificed their lives in that Great War, named as such due to its vast scale and status as one of the deadliest conflicts in human history.

16 million people lost their lives
20 million were injured

This immense loss touched nearly every town and village across the United Kingdom and much of Europe.

On this Remembrance Day, we reflect on the sacrifices made not only in World War I but in all wars. To mark this day, students from Primary and Secondary recited poems that capture the gravity of these periods of conflict.

The first poems were from Adam and Stefania in 6K, who had both written their own poems based on World War 2.

Next, our Head Boy Freddie, read "Remember" by Gwen Jaskiewicz.
Our final reading was by Head Girl, Ellie, with "For the Fallen" by Laurence Binyon.

World War I ended on the 11th November 1918, at 11 am. On the first anniversary of that day, the tradition of a two-minute silence began.

As we observe this day, let us remember all those who have lost their lives in conflicts past and present, and especially those affected by the recent tragic events brought about by heavy rains two weeks ago.

Our ceremony concluded with the playing of The Last Post, a traditional bugle call that honours the fallen, followed by a minute’s silence.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
