On Tuesday12th November the first of this year's GCSE practical drama examinations took place for the Year 11 Drama students. This year there were four group performances that explored a variety of issues that are extremely relevant in today's world and left our small invited audience with some thought provoking questions.
The Moral High Ground performed by Anna, Carlotta, Rubi and Carlotta explored the idea of questioning whether morals should or should not be followed without question by humanity. Their concept was portrayed through four different scenarios that portrayed the morals of honesty is the best policy, forget the rest and be your best, sharing is caring and curiosity killed the cat. Each character ultimately met with “Karma” who forced them to see their mistakes and that perhaps by following morals blindly, the consequences can be fatal.
Javier, Ella, Marcos and Miranda performed The Seven Deadly Sins - a piece of theatre that delves into the different ways the sins affect people. Their intentions were to make the audience think and spread awareness using the genre of comedy and showing how vulnerable we come to be in situations where we lack empathy and kindness, linking back to the idea of “sharing is caring”.
Elina, Nicolas, Alvaro and Amelia performed Miss Information - The Social Dilemma which explored the effects of social media, the internet and fake information on three friends with varying mindsets and the battle for supremacy between social media and society as a whole. Their aim was to create a contemporary and relevant piece that would inspire the audience to question their own relationship with social media and create an awareness of the subliminal control that social media and AI already has.
Finally, William, Vera and Irma performed The Game of Life - a high-stakes adventure that followed two girls, who find themselves trapped inside a simulated game show with only one way out: discovering their true identities and working together to overcome their fears and beat the Games Master. In a world where individualism is often emphasised, their piece strives to show that real power comes when we stand together, encouraging the audience to bring this message into their own lives.
The hard work, innovation and commitment of all those involved resulted in four entertaining yet thought-provoking performances that highlighted the outstanding abilities of our students, who gave dedicated, focused and strong portrayals on the day. A huge well done and congratulations to them all, they should be extremely proud of their achievements.
